I discovered Graphic Design through an elective "wheel" in middle school. Basically, the wheel was two electives that were only half a year. It seemed like the best way to get to try new things, and it was. I quickly decided I enjoyed design (Even though I was rather bad at it back then) and signed up for the full year of Graphic Design my 7th & 8th-grade years. Many students stuck with one elective throughout middle school so it was nothing out of the ordinary.
Highschool I was confronted with a choice again: Stick with Design, or move on to something else like medical or law. Electives wern't that big of a deal to me, I would love to say I picked design because I knew it was my calling but I didn't. I picked it simply because I wanted to enjoy highschool and I knew taking a class in my hobby would be way more fun than taking a law class. My designs improved in highschool, I overcame my first creative block, and I started learning photography so I could use my own images in my designs and make them fully mine.
College is where everything fell into place (Or went to madness depending on your perspective) Everyone wanted to know one thing "What do you want to do for the rest of your life". Many people had told me they saw me being a doctor or scientist based on nothing other than my science grades, I told them they didn't know me at all. It was about mid senior year that my mom asked me the question, refusing to push me one way or another but still wanting to make sure I was thinking about it, and I then and there made a decision. I told her "I've been learning design for 7 years, why not 4 more?" My parents were instantly supportive, my teachers had faith in my abilities, and with all that I applied to UCF and USFSP ready to continue improving my designs.
